Web Results (simply known as 'natural' or 'the rest of the page') are the website results located just under the maps. Prior to the advent of Local Business Results, this section and Sponsored Results are all a consumer would see. While Web Results are important the Local Business Results have pushed this a bit further down the page. There are no pay-per-click fees associated with this form of placement.
What all of this means to you.... While Sponsored Results is an effectve way to achieve top rankings, it's also very costly and will not render the same amount of clicks or calls as Local Map Results or Web Results listings. Both map and web results are known as 'oraganic' listings meaning Google has looked upon a particular website or business as offering significant value to consumers and as a result will place this business on the first page. As a rule of thumb consumers are far more likely to visit organically ranked businesses and websites as opposed to those that are sponsored.
Web Results can yield significant results as well. However, because you're under the maps and pay-per-click listings, you will not get a lot of exposure. Also keep in mind that the 'real estate' available in this section is limited and in many cases you find yourself competing with big directories like Super Pages, Service Magic, Merchant Circle and others for those few spots. They have a lot of money and expertise at their disposal, so it can be a tough fight.
Local Business Results is the ideal position for any small business. This allows ideal exposure by being featured at the top of the page while avoiding expensive pay-per-click fees and benefiting from consumer prefered 'organic' rankings.
Keep one thing in mind though, there are a maximum of seven map positions available on the first page of Google - sometimes less. Compare that to the number of businesses in compeition with you in your local area and you'll quickly understand why that first page position is so valuable to have - yet at the same time difficult to achieve and maintain.
